CHM’s Influenza Program

Influenza (the flu) is a highly contagious (viral) infection. It may be mild for some; however, it can cause very serious illness, hospitalisation and even death in otherwise healthy people. It can be especially serious for babies, people aged over 65, people with underlying medical conditions and pregnant women.

In Australia each year, the flu causes widespread illness resulting in substantial cost and loss of productivity for workplaces and organisations.

Approximately 1.5 million workdays are lost each year due to the flu resulting in millions of dollars of lost productivity.

Staff with the flu take an average of 2 weeks to recover with their health and wellbeing suffering.

The flu is highly contagious and can be spread before symptoms appear, multiple employees in the office or at a work site can contract the infection, leaving your business under resourced.

Immunisation is the best protection against the flu for you, your team, your business, and the community. By getting immunised, you also help protect those that are too ill or too young to be immunised and help slow the spread of the disease.

Annual immunisation is recommended in autumn (March – May) each year, prior to the peak of the flu season.

It is important to get the flu vaccine every year. The virus strains that cause the flu change each year and the vaccine changes each year to match these strains.

Who should get an influenza vaccination?

Annual immunisation against the flu is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age.
